Learning How To Decorate Cookies

Royal Icing on sugar cookie stars

Decorating cookies is a new adventure for us. I had never had much desire to really try, and Jess is interested in learning. There’s so many amazing professional cookie decorators out there, I am way out of my league. I don’t know how to teach it, so I bought books and have tried to show Jess videos.

Jessica cut and baked most of the shapes, and I made up several bags of royal icing in red, blue, green, and white. Since I’m fairly new to making royal icing and the different thicknesses, I made the colors a little thinner than they should have been. They tended to go straight over the edge of the cookies and then dry. But, that’s part of learning, right?

So, today has been learning how to play with icing.

Holly and Christmas trees

I really stink at icing! but it tastes great! LOL!

As I teach Jess how to do these things, I’m learning as well. I have never really played with cookies much, just not really that interested. I am learning since Jess wants to learn. I personally enjoy doing cinnamon rolls, popcorns, etc, that don’t necessarily require cookie dough.

I did work on a prototype of a football cookie that I want us to learn, since it is football season.

Football tryout

Thankfully this is on parchment, so the run sugar drip didn’t go far. The idea is a a pie wedge, with green stadium field and white markings, with the audience around the edge, and then a football in the middle. This definitely needs work, but this is the first time trying it out.

Super messy but quite tasty

With practice this can be made into pumpkin pies, other types of pies, or the stadium…just needs much more practice.

Thanks for stopping by! I’m going to go settle down from my sugar rush lol!
